IONITY and K Group to open Finland’s most efficient electric car charging station at Neste K Paimio

IONITY and K Group will open Finland’s fastest electric car charging station at Neste K Paimio in October. High Power Charging (HPC) points offer a charging capacity that is seven times higher than that of current fast chargers. Initially, the HPC station in Paimio will have charging points for two cars, but this can be raised to six charging points, as demand grows. Work on the station began in Paimio today. IONITY’s high power charging stations in Finland are part of its Pan-European network and will complement K Group’s own nationwide K Charge network.

The charging points, which are the fastest on the market, offer a charging capacity of up to 350 kW. An electric car can travel some 300 kilometres on a single full-power 15-minute charge depending on the capacity of the battery.

Later this year, IONITY and K Group will open two high power charging stations at K Group store sites on key motorways, running from Helsinki towards Tampere and Lahti. IONITY will be responsible for building, maintaining and operating the HPC stations, while K Group offers excellent locations for them.

“We have received a lot of positive feedback from our customers, who find that our nationwide K Charge network makes everyday life easier, as electric cars can be charged during a trip to the store. IONITY’s charging stations, which are the most powerful on the market, will further improve our service, as they enable faster charging on main motorways in Finland,” says Heikki Ahdekivi, Vice President in charge of new business development and the K Charge network in K Group’s car trade division.

IONITY’s HPC stations use the European charging standard CCS (Combined Charging System), with cross-brand all-electric car compatibility. The current fee charged is €8 per session with the IONITY application. With other charging services, each service provider sets the price based on IONITY’s price. Payment is possible with the IONITY app, K-Lataus app, Audi e-tron Charging Service and other charging services that support roaming.

“It is our vision that electric cars will become an option for an increasing number of drivers, which is why we are creating a network of powerful charging stations across Europe, which will also serve Finnish electric car drivers from this autumn onwards. At K Group’s store locations, IONITY’s HPC stations will be conveniently situated in places where drivers tend to stop when travelling long distances, which is great,”says Jan Haugen Ihle, Head of Northern European operations at IONITY.

IONITY is a joint venture by the Volkswagen Group, BMW, Daimler and Ford, which aims to build an extensive network of powerful and easy-to-use charging stations along major routes across Europe. IONITY aims to have a network of 400 high power charging stations by 2020. Currently, the network comprises 133 charging stations, the closest located in Sweden.

K Charge is K Group’s nationwide charging network for electric cars. By the end of this year, the network will comprise nearly 400 charging points at over 70 K Group store locations. The K Charge charging stations offer both basic and fast charging points. The cooperation with IONITY will add three high power charging stations to the network.
