GMO policy

The use of genetic engineering in food production is directly governed by two regulations. The regulation on genetically modified food and feed (EC 1829/2003) stipulates that a product must have labelling that indicates the use of genetically modified organisms or ingredients produced from them. However, labelling is not required if a proportion no higher than 0.9% of GMOs or ingredients produced from GMOs is detected provided that this presence is adventitious or technically unavoidable. Regulation EC 1830/2003 defines the traceability of organisms of genetically modified origin. 

Kesko monitors closely discussion, research and developments in legislation concerning the use of genetic engineering. Special attention is paid to products potentially offering added value to consumers, such as soy from which typical allergens have been removed.

No genetically modified food products or food products containing genetically modified ingredients are included in Kesko’s selections.
