"I'm called in when results matter and project needs to cross the finish line" - Sergei Ilin is a versatile IT expert and efficient leader

Sergei Ilin, 42, has had a long career in the IT industry, working on various projects across different countries. He joined Kesko through Onninen, where he began working in 2008. At that time, Sergei was working in his home country, Russia, but international projects eventually led him to Finland. In 2016, following Kesko's acquisition of Onninen, Sergei transitioned to working at Kesko.

"I’ve worked in many countries, and I enjoy working in different cultures. If I had to point out some cultural similarity, I’d say that people in each country love to claim that they’re more direct than people in their neighboring countries. Honestly, I’m still not sure why being the most direct is such a competition at workplace," Sergei notes.

Sergei currently works as a Senior IT Manager, but he describes himself as a universal project and program leader. Whether it's digital development, service creation, integrations, or acquisitions, Sergei is typically involved in these projects. Additionally, he considers himself a proponent of utilizing artificial intelligence. At present, Sergei is involved in the big procurement project, Elektroskandia integration and BTT IT project portfolio management.

"I don’t have a single area of expertise, but I’m sent where things need to be completed because I have a strong internal demand to get it out of my to-do list as soon as possible. So, that’s my expertise: getting things done," Sergei summarizes his skills.

Diverse projects enhance job satisfaction

Sergei's career has included a wide range of initiatives and projects. He spent several years working on the PIM program, which developed a product information management system for the building and technical trade division. Before that, Sergei participated in a project that migrated the entire BI landscape to the cloud, implemented warehouse automation upgrade and first version of Kesko data platform, divested K-Maatalous and successfully completed many other things. He has also been involved in several SAP implementations in various roles. Despite the many projects, it’s hard for him to name the most important one.

"Projects are all my little hobbies, and I want to master them. Perhaps one achievement was leading a project that lasted seven years to its completion. I joined in the middle. We developed new operating principles for the team and got everyone back on track and committed," Sergei shares.

The diversity and challenges of the work are important, but what truly matters is being able to make a positive impact and help others. Doing work that has real value is what drives Sergei. His proactive approach, focus on trust and willingness to communicate his aspirations have also advanced his career.

"I’ve always tried to understand how I can contribute in meaningful ways. Career advancement takes initiative, but the real reward is finding opportunities to make a difference," Sergei advises.

Interpersonal skills matter

Throughout his career, Sergei has led major IT changes, impacting teams ranging from a few dozen to hundreds of people. He credits his ability to communicate effectively with different people as his most valuable skill.

"I like to meet people in informal settings and chat with them casually, perhaps over a cup of coffee, rather than relying solely on formal meetings with PowerPoint presentations. Building trust through genuine interactions is key to success. In a large organization like Kesko, strong social and collaboration skills are essential," Sergei emphasizes.

Behind Sergei's long career is his satisfaction with Kesko as an employer. The IT field can be stressful at times due to tight schedules, constant change, and the high stakes of critical projects. However, a good work-life balance and continuous learning keep Sergei motivated.

"No matter how demanding the project, you're never doing it alone. There's always a team ready to support you and help you succeed," he notes.

"When I feel stressed, I start learning something new to keep my mind engaged and distracted from mental bubble-gum. It is a great way to reset. Plus, the flexible working hours are a big help—I can start my day with a gym session if I need to, and in the evening, I can unwind with a non-project hobby," Sergei concludes.

Sergei’s approach to work and life reflects a balance between dedication and well-being. His ability to lead, communicate, and build trust has propelled his career forward, while his commitment to continuous learning and personal growth keeps him grounded. Whether navigating the complexities of IT projects or finding ways to recharge, Sergei proves that success comes not just from hard or smart work, but from the support of a strong team and a mindset focused on making a meaningful impact.
