Did you know that a K-retailer can also be a beekeeper? Heli Romppanen, the retailer at K-Supermarket Suosikki in Suolahti, Central Finland, got interested in beekeeping when she was finding out about the operations of various small-scale producers. Now, she has a qualification in beekeeping and sells her homemade honey in the supermarket. The honey really is a local product, as it is produced in Vihijärvi, just a 15-minute drive from the store.

Sergei Ilin, 42, has had a long career in the IT industry, working on various projects across different countries. He joined Kesko through Onninen, where he began working in 2008. At that time, Sergei was working in his home country, Russia, but international projects eventually led him to Finland. In 2016, following Kesko's acquisition of Onninen, Sergei transitioned to working at Kesko.

Sneha Iyer Gundarathi, 34, is a prime example of a technology expert who transitioned from the consulting world to Kesko. Although she has been a full-time employee at Kesko for only about a year, she has worked on Kesko’s projects as a consultant for seven years.

In early 2023, K-Supermarket Piikkiö was renovated and expanded with the installation of new energy-efficient refrigeration units, LED lighting that can be adjusted for each department, and a powerful 100 kW fast charging station for electric cars. The store is now reaping the benefits of the extensive energy renovation in energy consumption: total consumption is now about a third lower per year than before the renovation.

Kesko has agreed to acquire three builders’ merchants in Denmark: Roslev Trælasthandel A/S, Tømmergaarden A/S, and CF Petersen & Søn A/S. The combined net sales of the three operators total some €400 million. The acquisitions are part of the execution of Kesko’s growth strategy in Northern Europe, and once completed, will make Kesko’s subsidiary Davidsen a significant nationwide operator in the Danish builders’ merchant market.

This spring, Kalatukku E. Eriksson began donating products at risk of going to waste to Stadin safka's food aid programme. Nearly 45 percent of the products nearing expiration or otherwise destined for waste are now redirected to food aid. Donated products mostly comprise fresh fish, but processed items such as smoked fish and salads are also included in the donations.

VTT and the University of Vaasa, in collaboration with 21 other organisations, have launched a major research project with the aim of making Finland a pioneer in the reuse of packaging. In addition to creating a system to enable the reuse of packaging in Finland, Finnish companies in key sectors will, if the project is successful, have the opportunity to benefit from a significant slice of the export market, which is estimated to grow to EUR 1.45 billion by 2035.

Time Magazine has listed the most sustainable companies in the world based on an extensive assessment. In this first assessment, 13 Finnish companies were ranked among the world’s most sustainable companies. Kesko is the best trading sector company in Finland and globally the tenth most sustainable in its industry.

The Finnish National Commission on Sustainable Development, the Ministry of the Environment, the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Employment, the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry, the National Nutrition Council and Ympäristömerkintä Suomi Oy presented awards to the best sustainable development commitments of 2023. K Group’s material efficiency and nutrition commitments were among the award-winning commitments.
